Janet Evanovich
Janet Evanovich is an American writer who consistently ends up on the New York Times bestseller list. Evanonivch was born in New Jersey, and had a housewife and a machinist for parents. She did well in school, going so far as to be the first member of her family to attend a university. She attended Douglass College, which was part of Rutgers University, and while there she decided to study art. After graduating, Evanovich did settle down and have children. After the arrival of her children she decided that she would be a housewife, so that she could take care of her kids to the best of her ability. Once she reached her thirties, she decided to try writing. To learn how to effectively write dialog, the author enrolled in some improve lessons, this was an interesting choice, and it may well have contributed to her writing skills. After ten years of attempting to write a Great American Novel, she decided to try writing romance novels, on suggestion of others. She found that she enjoyed the genre very much, but was unable to find publishers for her work. After a while she decided to get a job, and started working at a temporary employment agency. Finally, after several months, one publisher offered her $2000 for one of her books, this was a huge sum of money for her.
In 1987 the first Janet Evanovich book was published, entitled Hero at Large. At this point she wrote under the pen name Steffie Hall. In 1988 she began writing for Bantam under her real name. Janet Evanovich novels sold well, but she began to realize that she enjoyed writing action more than romance, and that lead her to write romantic adventures. This allowed her to explore action and adventure as much as, if not more than, in her romance books. Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum novels were her main focus from then on, with the writing all taking place in first person, and having heroes and villains in a clear cut adventuresome backdrop. The first book to come out under the Stephanie Plum title was titled One for the Money, which was released in 1994. The book received critical acclaim and movie rights were sold to Columbia Tristar for $1 million. No movie has been made, but it probably will happen at some point. Plum is a bounty hunter in the novels, which lends plenty of adventure to the story, but it is also about the relationships she has with the people around her, keeping a romantic element alive. Evanovich still works eight hours a day during the week, and then spends a lot of time touring after a new book is released. |
